No-one could have foreseen the onslaught of War on the horizon, but the 1938 Royal Variety Performance, held at the London Coliseum for the first time in ten years, was to be the last until 1945. The finale of the show, involving around 150 artistes, was the biggest ever for the Royal Variety Performance and seemed an appropriate, if unintentional grand finale before the grim and desperate years ahead.
