In 1988 Brinsworth House advertised for a Nurse in Charge to take the home from solely residential to Dual Registered I was lucky to be offered the Deputy’s post as that had became vacant at the same time.
To say it was a culture shock would be an understatement. I was propelled into this wonderful world which had so much warmth, excitement and of course egos, it was great. I was promoted to Senior Nursing Officer after two years, when Mr Elliott took up his post as Executive Administrator.
We made a great team, a boss who allowed me to recruit and train staff who had the same ideals as me, to care for these vulnerable, elderly and disabled members of old theatre and Music Halls to give them dignity, respect and love and to help them enjoy the remaining years that they had left.
It has been a wonderful 21 years. I have been so lucky over the years to be supported by staff who are dedicated and regard Brinsworth residents as extended family. At interview I always stress that the residents be cared for in a manner you’d wish your own mum and dad to be cared for.
Apart from my Deputy, Mrs De Silva, who has been at Brinsworth for 19 years, we have a staff of 57: 11 Registered Nurses, 25 Care Assistants (NVQ 2), 12 Catering, 2 Maintenance, 2 Laundry Ladies and 5 Cleaners. It’s a large staff all dedicated to the care of our wonderful residents.
The EABF make it all possible, as Mr Elliott has always said, “I’ll raise the money, you’ll spend it” and yes, I do. Good training and equipment for staff, beautiful surroundings to work in and, for nursing and residential residents, the best care possible".
